The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
