Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.

An important political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
