A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
